Over the last decade, Cheetos puffs snacks have been a focus of public and media attention due to the unique shapes that are formed during the manufacturing process. Cheetos puff snacks, otherwise previously known as Cheetos before 1998, is one of the bestselling cheese brands in the US. This flavored cheese brand has continued to wow fans across the world, thanks to its endless varieties and crunchy taste.
Since the introduction of Cheetos in 1948, there have been speculations about the processes that are involved in the production of this snack. At present, the processes involved in the production of Cheetos are understood by few. This article will focus on helping Cheetos lovers to understand how they can produce a Cheetos-like snack using a food extrusion line.
How to Make a Cheetos-like Snack?
Basically, Cheetos puff snacks are manufactured using an expressly designed machine known as a food extrusion line. This machine is divided into various sections to aid the manufacturing process. The following are the main steps that are involved in the production of Cheetos-like snacks;
1. Mixing Chamber
In the first stage, raw cornmeal is pumped into the manufacturing plant where water may be added to increase the moisture content to soften the meal. The cornmeal mixture is then blended to produce a uniform substance.
2. Extrusion Chamber
After mixing, the mixture is fed into an extruder. During extrusion, the cornmeal is rubbed between two metal blades to extract moisture from the meal. This process also leads to melting of starch and heating of the meal.
3. Conveying
Once the cornmeal is heated under high pressure, it combines with hot air that alters the shape and texture of the final product. Next, the heated meal is extruded via a perforated die into a conveyor belt. This conveyer belt leads to a heating chamber.
4. Pressure Heating
During the heating stage, the snack is heated under high pressure in a hot pan of vegetable oil. This vegetable oil helps to add a fatty taste as well as reducing the moisture content of the snack to about 2 percent. Lowering the moisture content is vital in enhancing crunchiness of the snack.
5. Flavoring/Spicing
As the conveyer transmits the snack from the cooking chamber, a mixture of powdered cheese and vegetable oil is sprayed on the snack via nozzles spaces which are strategically located near a tumble drum. This spraying is done from all sides to ensure uniform distribution of flavors in the final product.
Apart from cheese flavors, other varieties of flavors can also be added. These other flavors may include peanut, Pepsi, honey and salsa. Currently, there are over fifteen varieties of flavored Cheetos.
6. Quality Control
Like any other industrially manufactured product, Cheetos involves quality control assessments. Cheetos puff snacks are analyzed for quality in terms of taste, density and chemical composition. This process is conducted for every batch of snack produced to ensure quality is maintained.
The finished Cheetos snacks are then transmitted to the packaging zone, to be packaged, loaded, and transported.
