1. What is fish feed?

Fish feed as known as fish food, is a product used as feed meal to farmed fish and pet fish. Fish feed usually contain vitamins, vegetable proteins, wheat to maintain the fish healthy. The shape of fish feed are pellets, granule and tablet.

 

2. How to make floating fish feed?

Floating fish feed is produced by twin-screw extrusion: starch is cooked under heat and pressure, then puffed into porous, low-density pellets that stay afloat for up to 12–24 hours.

Key process:

1. Grinding – Raw materials (corn, wheat, fish meal) are ground into fine powder.
2. Mixing – Starches, proteins, oils and additives are blended into a uniform formula.
3. Conditioning – Steam and water pre-cook the mash to gelatinize the starch.
4. Extrusion – Twin-screw extruder cooks at 110–150°C under high pressure; the sudden pressure drop at the die puffs the dough into buoyant pellets.
5. Drying & Coating – Pellets are dried to safe moisture, then coated with oil and attractants.
6. Cooling & Packing – Finished feed is cooled, screened and bagged.

Key parameter:

• Buoyancy: pellets float 2–24 hours（Adjust according to the target fish species.）
• Starch content ≥15–20%( It is the key to extrusion and buoyancy.)

3. How to make Sinking fish feed?

Sinking feed is the opposite of floating feed: instead of puffing the pellet up, the line packs it dense — above the density of water — so it drops straight to the bottom where shrimp, crab, catfish and grouper feed.

1. Grinding — Corn, wheat and fish meal are milled into a fine powder.
2. Mixing — A low-starch (10–18%), high-protein formula — starch acts as a binder, not an expander.
3. Conditioning — Steam pre-cooks the mash for 60–180 seconds so the pellet holds together in water.
4. Forming — Ring-die pressing at 80–95°C, or low-shear “zero-expansion” extrusion — pellet density rises above 1.0 g/cm³.
5. Drying — Pellets are dried to a safe moisture level.
6. Cooling & Packing — Cooled, screened and bagged.

Key parameters — density >1.0 g/cm³ (typical 1.1–1.4) · starch 10–18% · forming 80–95°C (press) or 90–130°C (extruder) · water-stable 2–4+ h · species: shrimp, crab, catfish, grouper, carp.

Twin screw extruder makes floating fish feed, it deliver the mixed fish food powder smoothly by double screw inside, during this process, the fish food can reach more than 100 °C in the screw. When the fish food is extruded through the metal mould, fish feed is suddenly cooled down by meeting the room temperature, the shape will be expanded than original. The expanded fish food has a light weight, the pellet can float on the water.
